Concrete Polishing and Buffing

Concrete polishing is a multi-stepped procedure in which an existing concrete floor is honed, polished and Grounded with bonded rough abrasives in order for the floor to have a solid surface. The purpose of this is to create a mirror like effect on the concrete creating a uniform and flawless finishing. In order for this to be done it must first be prepared by grinding down the concrete. This is a delicate operation and if not done correctly can cause cracking. After the grinding has been done, a high grit sandpaper is used to remove the loose material, followed by a high grit finish polishing pad or paste to give the floor a polished look.

After the floor has been finished, it is subjected to a chemical that causes the surface to become polished. This chemical is Hydroxychloric acid (HCL), which gives the flooring a brilliant sheen. The multi-stepped process of Concrete Polishing creates a beautiful sheen that rivals that of granite.

HCL is commonly used as an oxidizing agent, creating a shiny and glossy surface after exposure to sunlight and heat. Another use is as an abrasive to remove small irregularities on the surface of concrete. Another use is to add small deposits of lime stone to enhance the look of a newly finished floor. Other uses of this chemical are in the production of synthetic and composite flooring products such as gypsum and epoxy resins.

In order for Concrete Polishing to give a good shine, it must be finished with a highly buffered acid-based product. Acid products give a highly polished and shiny surface that is stain resistant and does not scratch easily. There are two main types of buffing acids used. One type of buffing material uses small carbon particles, while the other type uses larger particles. Carbon particles are used because they will not scratch and they have a better distribution capacity so that a thin coating of material can be obtained. The larger the particle size, the faster the finish time will be.

After the acid polishing process is complete, a micro fibre finish is sprayed onto the flooring. This produces a film of film that protects the floor from stains. This film also prevents the acid from eating away at the surface of the flooring. As long as the acid is present in the water, the film will prevent the acid from attacking the surface of the flooring. The film will also prevent the acid from etching into the material. This film is not recommended for high traffic areas such as the parking lot or entrance areas of a building.

It takes a skilled person to polish concrete floors because of the different processes required for polishing different types of materials. Therefore, most home improvement stores do not carry this equipment. A qualified person should be able to use grinding and buffing machines to remove wax and minor stains on a concrete floor.
